Summer 2021 is swiftly approaching!

The girls are getting waxed, vaxxed, and it’s getting harder to secure a spot for brunch! After the train wreck that was 2020, we all deserve to have a little fun. And let’s face it, 2021 hasn’t been very nice to us either. So, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with craving some excitement.

A catalyst in pushing women to enjoy themselves more has been rapper, Megan Thee Stallion. She coined the term “Hot Girl Summer”. In an interview with the Root, Megan defines this as “basically just about women — and men — being unapologetically them, and just having a good-ass time.”

Of course, there are people who think that Hot Girl Summer is about women being overly promiscuous and acting out. However, for many of us, Hot Girl Summer (HGS) is not about the interactions that we have with other people at all. Rather, this time of year reminds us to focus more on ourselves, and the ways we want to show up in the world.

Instead of making ourselves a priority, Black women are usually taking care of everyone else. Megan’s creation of the term “Hot Girl Summer” challenges us to tell the people in our lives that we need a moment for us! All of our needs are different so naturally, we all are the owners of how our summer looks and feels like. Below I will be sharing a few tips on how to live your Hot Girl Summer in a way that is most authentic to you!

1. Don’t compare your summer plans to others.
This summer, I plan on increasing my bank account, starting my self-love journey, and spending time with some of my homegirls that I haven’t seen in a while. I will also be getting my daughter ready to start preschool. My HGS is going to be totally different than a 21-year-old college student.

She may pursue an internship; study aboard or just simply want to party until the fall semester starts. We all have different circumstances, and we should use this to our advantage! Who knows? I may run into a few partying 21-year old’s at brunch and we can all turn up together! I’ve been working on these knees for that very reason. Lol
2.Break up with them
Now, this is not for my friends that are in healthy and thriving relationships. Rather, if you have been looking at your partner with the side-eye since the pandemic started in 2020, bayybbbeeeeee, it just may be time to call it quits.
HGS is all about you falling in love with you and those that are on your same frequency. The summer is a great time to start fresh and get rid of those attachments that are no longer serving you. Since outside is opening back up, there will be plenty of chances of meeting someone that is better aligned with you.
3. Stay in your lane
This point coincides with the first tip, but let’s dig a little deeper. Critics of HGS do not understand the concept of duality and feel as though Megan can’t tell us to “have fun” while she is in a relationship. To me, I can be single and still be happy for my friends that are engaged.

HOWEVER, it does become an issue when you’re trying to be something you are not. If you are not into casual flings then don’t be outchea acting like you’re interested in that. If you want to have a “ho-tation”, don’t let the internet pressure you into a relationship. Do what feels good to you!
4. Try something new
Take that wine class! Get your lash certification. Do something that is going to make you feel like a new bitch! If you want to use HGS to focus on your mental health, then seek out a new therapist or incorporate more self-care practices into your weekly routine. Trying new things is excellent for your cognitive health so take advantage of the weather and go to that *socially distanced* yoga class.
5. Treat Yoself!
I will always be a proponent of Black women treating themselves like royalty. We are no longer waiting for people to see our value.

If you want that Telfar bag? Buy it.

Wanna take a solo trip out of the country? Book the flight.

You ready to buy your first home? Call the realtor.

I am learning how to invest in myself and the only con I have is that I should’ve started this sooner. Spend this summer spoiling yourself. You more than deserve it.

Do you have any plans for HGS? Will your Hot Girl Summer be more of a “warm girl summer”? I wanna hear all about it!
